Brian Chabot Named WPI Head Men's and Women's Track and Field Coach

Worcester, MA --- WPI Director of Physical Education, Recreation and
Athletics Dana L. Harmon announced today the hiring of Brian Chabot as
the Head Men's and Women's Track and Field Coach. Chabot takes over for
Mike Maceiko, who served as head coach the past four years.

"Brian has been a strong partner with Mike in the development of our
men's and women's track and field program over the last few years," said
Harmon. "We are looking forward to him providing the leadership and
direction to our program for years to come."

Chabot has filled the role as Maceiko's top assistant for the past four
seasons. Since his arrival at WPI, Chabot has helped 38 athletes earn
All-New England honors and eight garner All-ECAC distinctions.

"I am privileged to be taking over the reigns of such a talented group
of student-athletes," said Chabot. "During the last five years Coach
Maceiko brought WPI Track and Field back to a high level of prominence
not only in New England, but also the Northeast region and nationwide."

This past winter, three men took home All-New England and ECAC honors
after placing in the top eight during the indoor season. This spring the
men's team finished fourth at the NEWMAC Outdoor Championships, with
three men capturing first place finishes.

Building on momentum from their performance at the NEWMAC's, the men
finished eighth out of 26 teams in attendance at the All-New England
meet, with nine taking home honorable distinctions. Just two weeks
later, the men's team placed 18th out of 52 teams at ECAC's while four
earned All-ECAC honors.

On the women's side this past spring, three women teammates were
distinguished with All-New England accolades while one earned All-ECAC
honors.

Sophomore Jarett Arredondo and freshman Jeff Baker each competed in the
field at the 2008 Division III Outdoor Championships at the University
of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Arredondo finished 11th in the hammer throw while
Baker placed 17th in the javelin. Sophomore Ben Roy also provisionally
qualified for the NCAA's in the decathlalon.

"I hope to follow in the successful footsteps of Mike and build on the
momentum of this past year," commented Chabot.  "We hope to bring the
WPI Track and Field programs to an even higher level of success in the
future."

Prior to joining the staff at WPI, he coached indoor track and field at
his alma mater, St. John's High School in Shrewsbury from 2000-01. Under
Chabot's tutelage, the Pioneers set school records in the mile and the
4x800 relay.

In college, Chabot was a standout cross country and track and field
athlete at UMass-Amherst. Chabot was a two-year team captain in both
sports for the Minutemen and was All-New England in the 1000 meter run
in 1997 (2:28.4) . He graduated from UMass in 1999 with a double-major
in Psychology and History.

Throws coach Mike Stomski will return for a third season while Chabot is
hard at work identifying coaches to add to the coaching staff for the
upcoming season.
