Yagjian's offensive outburst leads Lyons past Monmouth, 13-6March 10, 2008 PHOENIX, AZ- Senior Jake Yagjian (Brewster, MA/Nauset Regional) went a perfect 5-for-5 with six RBI and four runs to lead the Wheaton College baseball team to its first victory of the spring Monday afternoon, a 13-6 triumph over Monmouth College. The Lyons, who are ranked 13th in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll, are 1-2 overall, while the Fighting Scots remain winless through five games. Wheaton piled on 12 runs through the first five innings, holding a 12-4 advantage until the ninth. Freshman leadoff hitter Eric Laliberte (Nashua, NH/Bishop Guertin) scored three runs and drew two walks, while junior Nick Pecora (Highland Park, NJ/Immaculata) went 2-for-6 with two runs, a pair of doubles and an RBI from the third spot, as Wheaton's top three hitters batted a combined 8-for-14 with nine runs and seven RBI. The Blue and White led throughout, taking a 2-0 lead in the first courtesy of a sacrifice fly from freshman Sean Munley (Trenton, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) and an RBI single by sophomore Jeff Lieneck (Foxboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers). Yagjian's two-run double in the second made it 4-1, and Wheaton's five-run fourth pushed the Lyons to a 9-2 lead. In the fifth, Yagjian smacked a three-run shot over the left center field fence, while sophomore Jason Clucas (Peabody, MA/Saint John's Prep) drove in Wheaton's ninth-inning run on a sac fly to left. Munley finished the game 1-for-1 with two RBI, a pair of walks and a run while getting hit by a pitch, senior Scott Guillerault (South Portland, ME/South Portland) was 1-for-2 with an RBI, walk and hit by pitch, while senior Ken Depasse (Holden, MA/Saint John's) scored three runs, drew a walk and stole a base. Junior southpaw Brian Hughes (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) earned the win in his first collegiate start, allowing four runs, two earned, on nine hits with one strikeout and two walks in six innings. Sophomore Jon Shepard (Salisbury, MA/Triton Regional) fanned three batters while keeping Monmouth hitless during two scoreless innings of relief, while freshman Chad Kasik (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) finished the game in the ninth in his collegiate debut.
