Six NEWMAC Student-Athletes Named to Academic All-District Teams

BABSON PARK, Mass. - Six New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) student-athletes were named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District One Team for baseball and softball last week, including three First Team selections. The six selections represented three NEWMAC institutions, as MIT, Springfield and WPI each had a pair of honorees.

NEWMAC Baseball Player of the Year Thomas Phillips (Durham, N.C.) earned First Team All-District accolades after helping MIT to a runner-up finish in the NEWMAC Baseball Tournament. Phillips led the NEWMAC in batting average, slugging percentage, home runs and walks. Phillips' teammate Dan Hyatt (Wallingford, Conn.) was also a Second Team pick.

WPI received a pair of First Team nods for softball, as teammates Nicole Maglione (Charlton, Mass.) and Jen Richards (Hampstead, N.H.) were tabbed. Maglione was among the league-leaders in batting average, on base percentage and runs scored.

NEWMAC Softball Tournament champion Springfield College also placed a pair of student-athletes on the All-District teams. Conference Player of the Year Michelle Wlosek (Nutley, N.J.) was a Second Team honoree, while Angie Atkins (East Haddam, Conn.) was named to the Third Team. The Pride captured the NEWMAC Championship last month after winning three times on the final day of the tournament.

With their selections to the First Team, Phillips, Maglione and Richards will be placed on the ballot for the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Team. Those teams will be voted on and announced later this month.

District I consists of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Quebec.
