BABSON PARK, MA - Meghan Bascetta, a 2006 graduate of
Springfield College and a member of the field hockey team, will
represent the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference
(NEWMAC) in national balloting for the NCAA Woman of the Year
award. The honor is given to a student-athlete who excels in
academics, athletics, leadership, and service. The NCAA Woman of
the Year will be announced in Indianapolis on October 28, 2006.
Bascetta, a Physician Assistant major and a Dean's List honoree,
graduated Magna Cum Laude in May and was a Class Marshal for
Springfield's School of Health Sciences and Rehab Studies. She
served on the Pride Athletic Advisory Committee from 2003-2005 and
was a member of the Physician Assistant Student Organization.
Bascetta participated in the Humanics in Action Day each year at
Springfield.
Bascetta received Springfield's top senior female team athlete of
the year honor after leading the Pride to its second-straight
NEWMAC Tournament title. Springfield advanced to the NCAA Division
III National Quarterfinals and finished its 2005 season with a 21-3
overall record. Bascetta started all 24 games for the Pride,
scoring 10 goals while adding 2 assists for 22 points.
Bascetta was selected to the 2005 National Field Hockey Coaches
Association (NFHCA) Division III Academic All-American Squad and
earned NEWMAC Academic All-Conference honors. She also earned
NFHCA/Dartfish First Team All-America honors and was named to the
NEWMAC All-Conference team each of the past two seasons.
The NEWMAC also recognized Katie Walters-Krohn of Smith College and
Elise Conley of Babson College for their excellence in academics,
athletics, leadership, and service.
Katie Walters-Krohn, a two-time Dean's List member, graduated from
Smith in May with a degree in Education and Child Studies. She
served as Head of New Students, Student Academic Advisor, House
Historian, Co-Secretary/Treasurer & Vice-President of the
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and as a Campus School Aide.
She performed extensive humanitarian service through efforts with
the Northampton Women's Shelter, Tsunami victims, and the
Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Walters-Krohn, a four-year team captain at Smith, graduated as the
highest point holder in Smith track and field history. This
four-time NEWMAC All-Conference Team Member was a recipient of
All-New England honors nine times.
Elise Conley, the 2005 NEWMAC and ECAC field hockey player of the
year from Babson College, led the nation in scoring in Division III
during a senior campaign that saw her guide the Beavers to their
first-ever NCAA tournament berth. The two-time First Team NFHCA
National All-American captured eight Babson school records,
including most career goals (77), assists (33), and points
(187).
Conley graduated from Babson in May with a Business degree.
