Mar 18, 2008NEWMAC Student-Athletes and Teams Honored by NFHCA![]() Babson Park, Mass.-The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced today that 47 student-athletes and six teams were honored by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). To qualify for the ZAG/NFHCA National Academic Squad student-athletes must carry a 3.30 cumulative grade point average. The National Academic Team Award recognizes teams that carry a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average. The six NEWMAC institutions, including Springfield, whose 3.48 team GPA was second in the country, were among 83 institutions recognized nationwide. The other five NEWMAC schools honored were Clark, MIT, Mount Holyoke, Wellesley and WPI. Representing Babson on the National Academic Squad were sophomores Emily Cohen (West Grove, Pa.), and Alyssa L'Bassi (Shrewsbury, Mass.), and first-year Colleen Kelly (Milton, Mass.). Clark honorees were sophomore Lauren DeMetro (Summit, N.J.), first-year Katelyn McGrath (Wilmington, Mass.), sophomore Chelsea Proulx (Franklin, N.H.), sophomore Gloria Torres (West Hartford, Conn.), and senior Katherine Willis (Lincoln, R.I.). From MIT sophomore Priscilla Army (Pomfret, Conn.), junior Alona Birjiniuk (Weston, Mass.), junior Katie Booth (Landenberg), senior Alexa Herman (Suffern, N.Y.), junior Cathy Mancuso (Bellmore, N.Y.), senior Lauren McCarthy (Birmingham, Mich.), sophomore Ekavali Mishra (Washington, D.C.) and junior Sally Simpson (Minneapolis, Minn.) were named. Mount Holyoke honorees were first-year Siobhan Anderson (Newcastle, Maine), senior Claire Emery (Blue Bell, Pa.), sophomore Katie Frick (Lafayette, N.J.), first-year Melissa Hartley (Longmont, Colo.), sophomore Ali MacFadden (Brimfield, Mass.), first-year Meredith Spencer-Blaetz (Amherst, Mass.), first-year Caitlin Sullivan-Gregory (Boxford, Mass.) and sophomore Peggy Wefald (Granger, Ind.). Named to the team from Springfield were first-year Meghan Bradley (Cumberland, R.I.), first-year Meagan Dobson (Longmeadow, Mass.), sophomore Kerry Haugh (Andover, Mass.), sophomore Karah Heald (Bedford, N.H.), senior Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.), junior Jane Kelleher (Chatham, Mass.), senior Julia Kincade (Durham, N.H.), junior Katherine McCarthy (Conway, Mass.), sophomore Emily Murray (Boonton, N.J.), junior Jillian Urtz (Verona, N.Y.) and senior Brittany Veazie (Dexter, Maine). Honorees from Wellesley included first-years Madeline Block (Saratoga, Calif.), Kate Cushing (Danvers, Mass.), Kathryn Frett (Hallowell, Maine), sophomore Catherine Marchetta (Princeton, N.J.) and junior Katie Sang (Cupertino, Calif.). WPI was represented by senior Heather Hassett (Oxford, Mass.), sophomore Kelly Johnson (Buxton, Maine), first-year Meghan Linskey (Bridgewater, Mass.), junior Nicole Maglione (Charlton, Mass.), sophomore Lindsay Mullins (Ashburnham, Mass.), senior Katie Nehmer (Southwick, Mass.) and senior Mary Kate Toomey (Worcester, Mass.).
