NEWMAC Student-Athletes Dominate NFHCA All-Region Honors

BABSON PARK, Mass. - The National Field Hockey Coaches' Association (NFHCA) has announced its 2009 All-Region and All-America teams and the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) collected an impressive number of honors. MIT freshman Molly McShane (Lake Bluff, Ill.) and Springfield's Morgan Rein (Mystic, Conn.) were each tabbed to the All-America Second Team while McShane was also named the New England East Player of the Year. On the regional level, NEWMAC student-athletes were responsible for 20 of the 32 selections to the New England East Region First and Second Teams.

McShane, a First Team NEWMAC All-Conference pick, tallied eight goals and seven assists in 23 games as a freshman while helping MIT capture the conference championship and advance to the Second Round of the NCAA tournament. Rein finished the season with a team-best 36 points as she tied for the team-lead in goals with 11 and led the offense with 14 assists. She recorded five game-winning goals and finished the year as the league leader in assists per game with 0.67.

The NEWMAC selections to the New England East First Team were Sarah Fredlund (New Preston, Conn.), Colleen Kelly (Milton, Mass.) and Jess Paladino (Turner, Maine) of Babson, Lauren Blake (Oakland, Maine) and Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) from Clark, Mount Holyoke's Tricia Chase (Feeding Hills, Mass.), McShane, Keri Dixon (Bethlehem, Pa.) and Anna Teruya (Hockessin, Del.) of MIT, Rein, Wellesley's Callie Lekas (Brewster, Mass.) and Cassie Abel (Windham, N.H.) of Wheaton.

The Second Team honorees were Shara Robertson (KwaZulu Natal, South Africa) from Mount Holyoke, MIT's Kimberly Barker (Camden, N.Y.), Julie Hoppman (The Plains, Va.) of Springfield, Kate Cushing (Danvers, Mass.) and Kathryn Frett (Hallowell, Maine) from Wellesley, Wheaton's Alex Block (Saratoga, Calif.) and Jessica Strock (Centerville, Mass.) and WPI senior Kelly Johnson (Buxton, Maine).
