Oct 27, 2007 Top-Seeded Babson Blanks #8 MIT, 4-0, To Advance BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Top-seeded Babson College scored three
times in the opening half on its way to a 4-0 victory over
eight-seeded MIT in the quarterfinals of the 2007 New England and
Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey Tournament at
MacDowell Field on Saturday. With their 13th win in their last 14
games, the Beavers improved to 14-6 overall and will now host the
NEWMAC Semifinals and Finals next weekend. Meanwhile, MIT sees its
season come to a close with a record of 4-13.
After neither team scored during the first 20 minutes, Babson
netted a pair of goals in a four-minute stretch to take control of
the contest. First-year Sarah Fredlund (New Preston, Conn.) opened
the scoring when she converted a feed from sophomore Jess Paladino
(Turner, Maine) at 21:19, and junior Nicole Cemelli (Towaco, N.J.)
made it 2-0 when she scored off an assist from senior Mikayla Shea
(Dover, N.H.) at 25:19. Senior tri-captain Michele Farley
(Skowhegan, Maine) would tack on another goal at 37:33, as Babson
took a 3-0 lead into the break.
Babson continued to dominate the majority of play in the second
half, with Farley scoring her second goal of the game on a direct
shot off a penalty corner with 7:12 remaining in the game. Cemelli
picked up her second assist and fourth point of the day on the
play, while senior tri-captain Annie Pease (Waterville, Maine) was
also credited with an assist. Sophomore Ekavali Mishra (Washington,
D.C.) recorded MIT’s only shot on goal in the contest with
four minutes remaining, but sophomore Emily Cohen (West Grove, Pa.)
turned it away for her lone save of the afternoon.
Senior goalie Alexa Herman (Suffern, N.Y.) finished with seven
saves in her final collegiate game for the Engineers.
The Beavers will now host face either fourth-seeded Springfield and
fifth-seeded Mount Holyoke in Saturday’s first semifinal game
at noon, with #2 Wellesley and #3 Wheaton doing battle in the
second semifinal matchup at 2 p.m. Babson will also play host to
the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
