Oct 31, 2009 #1 Wellesley Spooks #8 Wheaton 4-1 To Power Through NEWMAC Field Hockey Quarterfinals WELLESLEY, Mass. - Top-seeded Wellesley College scored four
unanswered goals in the second half to wrap up a 4-1 home victory
over Wheaton College in Saturday's NEWMAC quarterfinals.
The Blue outshot Wheaton by a commanding 32-13 margin, but the
first half dished up all tricks and no treats for Wellesley as none
of their 18 first-period shots found the back of the net. The Lyons
struck first on Margaux Bolte's goal in the 33rd minute and went
into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Wellesley scored the equalizer three minutes into the second
period as Callie Lekas (Brewster, MA) netted a
rocket off Dana Trail's (Trappe, PA) penalty
corner. Molly Morrow (Bow, NH) converted a
penalty corner ten minutes later, sneaking a shot through traffic
in front of the net for the eventual winner.
Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA) put back a rebound
off the Wheaton goalkeeper in the 53rd minute to give Wellesley a
3-1 advantage, and Lekas scored a second time off a nice feed from
Sally Scudder (Delafield, WI).
Junior goalkeeper Sarina Sawyer (Wilmette, IL)
made nine saves for the Blue in her first postseason start.
Wheaton's Andrea Bagley collected twelve in the loss.
Wellesley College will host both semifinal games next weekend,
as the Blue take on fourth-seeded Springfield College, and #2 MIT
and #6 Mount Holyoke square off in the second match.
