Babson Park, Mass.-Two New England Women's and Men's Athletic
Conference student-athletes have been named to the 2008 ESPN the
Magazine Academic All-America college division basketball team, as
voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America
(CoSIDA). MIT junior Jimmy Bartolotta (Littleton,
Colo.) was named to the men's first team while U.S. Coast Guard
Academy Senior DeCarol Davis (Woodbridge, Va.) was
named to the women's third team.
Bartolotta was the only junior selected to the college division
first team. A native of Littleton, Colo., Bartolotta maintains a
converted 3.79 grade-point average while majoring in Management
Science and Physics. He led the NEWMAC in scoring, averaging a
school-record 23.9 points per game this season while moving into
fourth place on the MIT all-time scoring list with 1,479. He is a
finalist for the Jostens trophy, given to the most outstanding
Division III men's and women's basketball players of the year.
Bartolotta started 24 games for the Engineers this season, who
finished 3-9 in NEWMAC play and ended their season with a loss to
Coast Guard in the first round of the NEWMAC tournament. Bartolotta
was also named to the 2006-07 NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team.
Davis, who has started 22 games this season, is ranked first in
the senior class of 226 cadets as she carries a 3.96 GPA in
Electrical Engineering. She is averaging 7.2 points, 3.7 rebounds
and 2.7 assists per game for Coast Guard which set the
single-season record for wins with 22 as the team is 22-4 overall
while going 11-2 in NEWMAC play. The Bears will take on Springfield
in the semifinals of the NEWMAC tournament on Saturday afternoon.
This is Davis' first selection to the Academic All-America team;
she has been named to the Academic All-District I team the past two
seasons. She was also named the 2007 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Female Sports
Scholar of the Year, was a 2007 Rhodes' Scholar finalist, and is on
the Coast Guard Academy's Commandant of Cadet's List for Military
Excellence and Dean's List.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or
key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a
scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic
standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by
his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception
in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more
than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA
covering all NCAA championship sports.
