SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - May 6, 2018 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team will hit the road to take on Stevens in the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship Second Round on Wednesday, May 9.
The Pride, which is making its 11th-straight trip to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, captured the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on Saturday after downing Coast Guard, 11-7. This season, Springfield has a 13-5 record and has won its last seven games.
Stevens, which was ranked 14th in the latest USILA National Coaches Poll, owns a 17-2 record and have won their last eight contests. The Ducks scored nine unanswered goals to build a 9-1 halftime lead and held on to defeat St. John Fisher College 13-9 to win the Empire 8 Conference Championship to earn an automatic bid into the NCAA's. This marks the first trip to the national tournament for Stevens since 2013.
Earlier this season on March 3, despite holding a 12-9 lead midway through the fourth quarter, Springfield was toppled by then-16th-ranked Stevens, 13-12, at the DeBaun Athletic Complex. For Springfield, Jack Vail (Franklin, Mass.) totaled three goals and two assists, both Tom Hurley (Goffstown, N.H.) and Duncan Preston (South Portland, Maine) added three goals, and Matt Allen (Chevy Chase, Md.) handed out four assists. Joseph Cameron (Stoneham, Mass.) dominated the face-off "X", winning 23-of-28 draws and picking up 14 ground balls, and between the pipes, Jake Reynolds (Scituate, Mass.) was credited with 10 stops.
In the same side of the bracket as Springfield, Albion will face New England College on Tuesday, with the winner facing top-seeded RIT. The winner of the Springfield/Stevens game will face the victor of the RIT and Albion/NEC contest.
