NEWMAC Announces 2008-09 Swimming & Diving Post-Season Award Winners

Babson Park, Mass. - The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference announced its 2008-09 Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving post-season award winners on Thursday.

After leading the MIT men's swimming & diving team to the NEWMAC Championship last weekend, Dawn Gerken was named the Men's Swimming Coach of the Year. Springfield coach Peter Avdoulos of Springfield was tabbed as the Men's Diving Coach of the Year. Coast Guard received the league's Sportsmanship Award.

On the women's side, J.P. Gowdy was honored as the Swimming Coach of the Year after helping Wheaton secure a third-place finish at the NEWMAC Championship. Joe Chirico of Wellesley received Diving Coach of the Year accolades while Coast Guard was chosen as the NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award recipient.

In addition to these awards handed out Thursday, Swimmers, Divers and Rookies of the Year were named at the conclusion of the women's and men's Championship Meets. Following the women's meet at MIT two weeks ago, Moira Price (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) of Springfield was named NEWMAC Swimmer of the Year, teammate Kaitlin Reilly (Cumberland, R.I.) earned top newcomer honors and Wellesley senior Kate Sorenson (Bolton, Mass.) was tabbed as the NEWMAC Diver of the Year after sweeping both boards. At the conclusion of the men's competition this past weekend, Rastislav Racz (Bratislava, SLOVAKIA) received the Swimmer of the Year award while teammate Tim Stumbaugh (Loveland, Colo.) was named the top rookie. Brian Sobel (Stratford, Conn.) of Springfield won both the one and three-meter diving competitions en route to Diver of the Year honors.
