NEW LONDON, CONN.--Top-seeded MIT won its 10th straight New
England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's tennis
tournament championship beating third-seeded Babson 5-1 in the
championship match at the Coast Guard Academy.
The
Engineers (16-5) beat fourth-seeded Wheaton 5-0 in the semifinals
while third-seeded Babson outlasted second-seeded Springfield 5-4
in the other semifinal.
In the
semfinals, Babson's Edwin Lee beat Springfield's Tim Tunis 7-5,
1-6, 6-4 at No. 6 singles to break a 4-4 tie and put the Beavers in
the championship match.
MIT opened
the championship match by winning both the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles
matches. Eric Beren and Ken Van Tilburg beat Alex Kamergorodsky and
Brian Lafayette 8-5 at No. 1 doubles while Peden Nichols and
Jonathan Farm beat Austin Conti and Steve Huang 8-5 at No. 3
doubles. Babson (11-11) got its point at No. 2 doubles as Walt Sea
and Ben Edick outlasted Kevin Pang and David Iba 9-8 (8-6) .
Beren (No.
1 singles), Pang (No. 2 singles) and Jonathan Farm (No. 5 singles)
all won in singles to clinch the championship for the Engineers.
