The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference

Babson Park, Mass. - The New England Women and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced its 2008 Men's and Women's Track & Field post-season awards on Tuesday. Stephen Morton (Lexington, Ky.) of MIT and Renee Thompson (Hartford, Conn.) of Wheaton were named the Male and Female Athletes of the Year, respectively. Mark Williamson (Vienna, Va.) and Laurenmaria Smith (Providence, R.I.), both from Wheaton, received the Male and Female Rookie of the Year awards. Halston Taylor, of MIT was named the Men's Coach of the Year, while Paul Souza of Wheaton was named the Women's Coach of the Year. The Coast Guard Academy's men's and women's team were each honored with the NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award.

Morton, who helped MIT capture the NEWMAC men's championship, earned First team All-Conference honors in both the 100m and the Long Jump, while making the Second team in the 200m. Thompson helped lead Wheaton to the NEWMAC women's championship by earning three First team All-Conference spots. She placed first in the 400m and was also part of Wheaton's victorious 4x100m and 4x400m relays teams. Williamson won the 400m, while also being a part of the First team All-Conference 4x100m team and the Second team 4x400m squad. Smith joined Thompson on the 4x100m team, earning a spot on the First team All-Conference.
