NEWMAC Student-Athletes, Coaches Honored by USTFCCCA

BABSON PARK, Mass. - Two New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) student-athletes and three coaches received regional awards from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday. Springfield had a pair of athletes honored. Stephen Headley was named the Men's Track Athlete of the Year for New England while Nikki Hay was tabbed as the Women's Field Athlete of the Year in the region. MIT coach Halston Taylor was named the Women's Head Coach of the Year while his counterpart Brian Chabot of WPI received the same award on the men's side. In addition, Springfield's Joe Van Gilder was picked as the top Men's Assistant Coach in New England.

Headley was named the NEWMAC Track Athlete of the Year, after winning three events at the NEWMAC Track & Field Championship last month. He took first in the 100, 200 and 4x100-meter relay, as Springfield finished third overall.

Hay earned All-Conference honors in five different events at the NEWMAC Championship. She placed first in the 100 and 200-meter dashes as well as the long jump while finishing as the runner-up in the triple jump and the 4x100 relay. The junior will compete in the triple jump at this weekend's NCAA Championship.

Taylor helped MIT capture its second NEWMAC Championship in three years. His team also won the New England Division III Championship for the first time in program history. Chabot helped lead WPI to a second-place finish in the NEWMAC, as well as a fourth-place showing at the New England Division III meet, the program's highest standing at the regional championship in 15 years.

The USTFCCCA selects the top track athlete, field athlete, head coach, and assistant coach for the eight regions in NCAA Division III outdoor track & field.
