Apr 25, 2009MIT Wins 2009 NEWMAC Men's Track & Field Championship![]() SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (April 25, 2009) - The Massachusetts Institute of Technology men's and women's teams captured titles today at the 2009 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Track and Field Championship hosted by Mount Holyoke College. It was the second time in the history of the league that both the men's and women's teams from the same institution secured championships in the same year. Ironically, it was the Engineers who first achieved the feat in 2007. It was the ninth consecutive NEWMAC Championship for the MIT men, who have totaled ten league titles overall. On the women's side, the Engineers earned their second NEWMAC Championship. They also took home top honors in 2007. A total of eight teams took part in the women's competition. Following MIT (248) in the team standings were, Springfield College (175), Wheaton College (155), Smith College (81), WPI (60), Babson College (27), Mount Holyoke (15) and the Coast Guard Academy (9). Leading the way for the Engineers was first year Portia Jones (Queens, N.Y./Peddie), who grabbed first place in the 400-meter dash (57.69) and second place in the 200-meter dash (26.57). She was also the first leg of the winning 4 x 100-meter relay team (49.47) and the fourth leg of the 4 x 400-meter relay squad that finished second (4:05.64). Of the 20 women's events, MIT athletes recorded first place ten times. Junior Nikki Hay (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) was a triple winner for Springfield. In addition to her first place finishes in both the 100-meter (12.39) and 200-meter (25.61) dashes, she grabbed top honors in the long jump (5.59 meters). Hay posted second place results in both the triple jump (11.86 meters) and the 4 x 100-meter relay (50.35). Four NEWMAC Championship records were broken on the women's side. New marks were established by MIT junior Amy Magnuson (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) in the 100-meter hurdles (14.48), Wheaton first year Mickey Jusme (Providence, R.I./Classical) in the triple jump (11.98 meters), MIT senior Emily Hwang (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) in the pole vault (3.82 meters) and Wheaton's 4 x 400-meter relay team (3:55.85). On the men's side, six teams vied for the championship. MIT (230) bested WPI (179), Springfield (151), Coast Guard (137), Wheaton (56) and Babson (14). The Engineers were paced by senior Jake Ruzevick (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) and junior Stephen Morton (Lexington, Ky./Bryan Station), who each tallied two second place finishes. Ruzevick was runner-up in both the 1,500-meter (3:59.51) and 5,000-meter (16:00.15) running events. Meanwhile, Morton placed second in the long jump (7.02 meters) and the triple jump (14.07). Of the 20 events, MIT athletes earned first place five times and second place eight times. Junior Stephen Headley (Wilbraham, Mass.) was a three time winner for Springfield. He notched first place results in both the 100-meter (10.78) and 200-meter (21.78) dashes and was the anchor leg of the 4 x 100-meter relay team, which registered a NEWMAC record time (41.51). In addition to that record, three other NEWMAC Championship marks fell on the men's side. New standards were set by Wheaton sophomore Mark Williamson (Vienna, Va./James Madison) in the 400-meter dash (48.22), Springfield senior Mike Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) in the 800-meter dash and MIT junior Greg Tao (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Jefferson) in the pole vault (4.84 meters).
