MIT Captures Men's NEWMAC Title
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Massachusetts Institute of
Technology captured both the men's and women's team titles at the
2012 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)
Track and Field Championships, hosted by Smith College on
Saturday. Six NEWMAC records were broken during the
competition.
On the men's side, MIT totalled 267 points for their 13th title in
14 years and 12th in a row. WPI was the runner up with 179
points, while Springfield was third with 147. Wheaton (82),
Coast Guard (81) and Babson (12) rounded out the competition.
For the women, the Engineers finished with 208 points for their
fourth straight title and fifth in the last six years.
Wheaton (Mass.) piled up 144 points to finish second, followed by
Springfield in third with 107, and WPI fourth with 91.5.
Hosts Smith came in fifth with 82.5, followed by Wellesley (56),
Coast Guard (42), Babson (27), and Mount Holyoke (22).
A new men's NEWMAC record was set in the steeplechase, by
Springfield's Zach Pietras, who finished in 9:17.15, breaking the
seven year old mark of 9:20.00.
Five new marks were set on the women's side, including a new 4x100
meter relay mark of 47.84 set by MIT's Jacqueline Brew, Martha
Gross, Jamie Simmons, and Portia Jones, breaking a mark last set in
2010.
Wheaton's quartet of Amanda Claflin, Ashante Little, Lauren
Cardarelli, and Meredith Scannell set a new 4x400 meter mark in
3:53.17, breaking a three year old record. Wheaton's Didi
Jusme broke her own record in the 100 meter hurdles, with a time of
14.16,
Two records were also broken in the field events - MIT's Tilly
Taylor broke a nine year old record in the javelin with a throw of
41.20 meters, while Mount Holyoke's Mirian Larson-Koester bested a
13 year old record in the discus with a toss of 40.38 meters.
The following finished first and second in each event and received
first and second team All-NEWMAC honors.
