Coast Guard Captures 2006 NEWMAC Women's Volleyball Championship

NEW LONDON, Conn.--  Sophomore Nicole Gurr registered 24 kills, while junior Corinne MacCormack added 18 kills and 19 digs to lead top-seeded Coast Guard to its first-ever NEWMAC Volleyball championship with a 3-1 victory over third-seeded Springfield in the 2006 title match.

The Bears, now 23-2 on the season with a school-record 19-match winning streak, claim the NEWMAC's automatic berth into next weekend's NCAA Division II Volleyball Championships, with regional action slated for M.I.T.

The Pride, 27-8 overall, took the first game by a 30-27 final, but Coast Guard rallied to win the final three games by scores of 30-22, 30-20 and 30-19.  Mary Kathryn O'Neil led Springfield with 16 kills, while Nicole Curtain added 14 kills in the setback for the Pride.
