Sonnie Terrell Named Interim Head Volleyball Coach at Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (August 21, 2008) - The Mount Holyoke College Department of Athletics is pleased to announce the hiring of Sonnie Terrell as its interim head volleyball coach. Terrell succeeds Peer Nasseir, who guided the program to a 22-53 mark in three seasons at the helm.

"We are pleased to have Sonnie on board for the coming year," said Mount Holyoke Director of Physical Education and Athletics, Laurie Priest. "She brings great experience and has the enthusiasm we need to build our program for future success."

Prior to joining the Mount Holyoke staff, Terrell enjoyed a two-year stint (2006-2008) as an assistant coach at Smith College. While at Smith, she directed the non-traditional season, developed offensive and defensive strategies, designed and directed practices, assisted in recruiting, developed and implemented an off-season training and conditioning program and developed scouting reports on opponents. Terrell recently graduated from Smith with a Master of Science Degree in Exercise and Sport Studies with an emphasis in women's coaching.

From 2002-2006, Terrell served as an assistant coach on both the volleyball and softball staffs at Hanover College (Ind.). In 2005, she was the interim head coach for the softball program at the College.

A standout student-athlete at Franklin College (Ind.), Terrell was a four-year member (1998-2001) of the volleyball program, serving as team captain as a senior. In 2002, she was named the school's David C. Naile Memorial Award winner for outstanding leadership and mental attitude as a female, senior athlete. She also participated in softball as a first year (2000). Terrell graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Secondary Education and Physical Education from Franklin in 2002.
