A Pair of NEWMAC Student-Athletes Earn Academic All-District Honors
Babson Park, Mass. - The New England Women's and Men's Athletic
Conference (NEWMAC) had a pair of student-athletes named to the
CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District One first team for
women's volleyball. Juniors Alex May (Des Moines,
Iowa) of MIT and Becca Holmberg (Madison, Conn.)
from WPI were the two NEWMAC honorees.
May, the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year two seasons ago, was named to
the All-Conference first team this season after helping lead MIT to
a 21-16 record and a third place finish in the NEWMAC. Her 457
kills were tops on the team and she was second on the squad with
380 digs in 35 matches played. May carries a 3.80 GPA while
majoring in brain and cognitive sciences.
Holmberg led WPI with 248 kills in 27 matches this season. She
also racked up 281 digs, 17 blocks and 26 service aces on the year.
The junior has maintained a 3.72 cumulative GPA in biomedical
engineering.
With their selections to the first team All-District, May and
Holmberg will be placed on the ballot for the CoSIDA/ESPN the
Magazine All-America team, which will be voted on and announced
later this month.
District I consists of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New
Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Nova Scotia,
Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Quebec.
