CAMBRIDGE, Mass.
- DAPER Department Head/Director of Athletics,
Julie Soriero, has announced the hiring of Cecelia DeMarco as the
interim head coach of the MIT women's basketball team. An 18-year
veteran of the NCAA Division I coaching ranks, DeMarco will guide
the Engineers' Division III program for the 2007-08 season.
From 1990-99, DeMarco directed the women's basketball program at
Yale University, finishing as the all-time winningest coach with a
ledger of 107-127. During her tenure, the Bulldogs broke into the
upper tier of the Ivy League, ranking third at the close of the
1992-93 campaign. DeMarco's squads placed in the top half of the
conference three more times over the course of six seasons. She has
coached many Bulldog players to their own milestones: four players
have reached the 1,000-point mark, one broke the all-time scoring
record, another surpassed the Yale and Ivy League all-time assists
standards, two earned Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors, and
numerous others captured All-Ivy accolades.
Prior to her arrival at New Haven, DeMarco served as the
Director of Athletics at Bridgewater State College. Before
returning to her alma mater, she took over the reins of the program
at the University of New Hampshire, where she compiled a nine-year
record of 136-86 from 1977-86. DeMarco posted three 20-win seasons
and her teams captured the ECAC Regional Championship in 1983 and
1984. She was named the Converse District I Coach of the Year in
1983 after leading the Wildcats to a 24-7 record. In 1997, DeMarco
was inducted into the prestigious UNH Wildcat Winner Circle Hall of
Honor.
DeMarco made her head coaching debut in 1973, when she began a
three-year stint at Bishop Fenwick (Mass.) High School. She guided
her teams to a 54-4 record and three conference titles. DeMarco's
first collegiate position came during the 1976-77 season as an
assistant coach for Washington State University.
In 1987, DeMarco was asked to represent the United States
government on a goodwill basketball teaching tour through Africa.
She helped train the Somalian women's national team and conducted
clinics for both men and women in Kenya, Zimbabwe and Somalia.
Following her departure from Yale, DeMarco returned to New
Hampshire where she has served as a part-time physical education
instructor. At the same time, she has worked as a women's
basketball analyst for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
(MAAC) television network as well as ESPNU. Since 2002, DeMarco has
been the co-director of Hoop It Up, a small basketball clinic and
camp for middle schools girls in the sea-coast region of New
Hampshire. She has also filled her time with officiating
intercollegiate women's lacrosse games.
A 1973 graduate of Bridgewater State with a bachelor's degree in
Health and Physical Education, DeMarco was a four-year starter for
the Lady Bears and led her team to three state championships. In
October of 1998, DeMarco was inducted into the Bridgewater State
College Athletic Hall of Fame. DeMarco went on to earn a masters
degree in Physical Education from Washington State.
