Wheaton Eliminates Smith from NEWMAC Women's Tennis Tournament

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Massachusetts Institute of Technology played host to the 2009 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Tennis Championship today at the duPont Tennis Courts. The two-day event continued with semifinal matches as the #6 seed Engineers of MIT faced the #2 Blue of Wellesley College and the #4 Pioneers of Smith College played the #1 Lyons of Wheaton College. After Sunday morning's matches, the Lyons and Blue secured spots in the afternoon's championship, leaving the Engineers and Pioneers with only the opportunity to watch from the bleachers.

In the first semifinal, Smith College looked to upend regular-season conference winner Wheaton College. Coming off a quarterfinal match that ended late the prior evening and missing stars Holly Reich and Isabel Pal, the Pioneers were unable to match the Lyons on the court.

In doubles play, Wheaton's #1 team of Sarah Geocaris and Catherine Teague were relentless and ran to a 8-0 shutout. The Lyon's #2 pair of Allesandra DiOrio and Katherine Knies struggled a bit against Smith's Clair Oblamski and Alanna Dick but eventually pulled out a 9-7 win to put Wheaton in the driver's seat with a 3-0 lead.

As singles play began, the Lyons only needed two points to secure the match. Teague came through again and won in the #2 spot [6-0, 6-0] and it was Roz Chesky in the #6 position who defeated Smith's Margaret Steiner [6-0, 6-2] to close out the 5-0 shutout for Wheaton.
