MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Wellesley College
advanced to the NCAA second round with a 5-0 victory over Mount
Saint Mary College (13-4) in an NCAA Regional match at Middlebury
College (Vt.).
Wellesley swept doubles play in convincing fashion, allowing just
two games against them, to take a 3-0 lead.
At three, Melissa Clark and Kendall
Tada opened the match with an 8-0 defeat over Jillian
Torre and Johanna Seidel. The first and second flights both
finished 8-1 in Wellesley's favor, as Marie
Watanabe and Sojung Lee defeated Gabriela
Murphy-Goldberg and Annmarie Llewellyn at one, and Diana
Granger and Erica Choo defeated Alissa
Niad and Jill Saydlowski at two.
In singles, Wellesley won matches at #3 and #5 to seal the team
victory, sending the Blue into the second round. At three,
Wellesley's Clark made quick work of her opponent, defeating Niad,
6-0, 6-0. Lee then sealed the team victory for the Blue with a
similar 6-0, 6-0 win over Torre at five.
Wellesley was ahead 1-0 in each of the other battles on court when
the match was decided.
The Blue (17-6) will now take on Bowdoin College on Saturday
afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
