Louisville, KY --- WPI's Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) has been named a semifinalist for the 2019 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division III Softball Player of Year award. The senior is just one of 25 players nationwide, and the only third baseman and representative of the New England, to make the most recent list.
Wood, the NEWMAC Player of the Year and a three-time all-conference honoree, is batting .455 and ranks fifth in Division III with 56 RBI, seventh with 113 total bases and 13th with 12 home runs. The senior also leads the NEWMAC with 60 hits and four sacrifice flies, as well as a .856 slugging percentage, and is on a four-game hitting streak heading into the NCAA tournament. In 18 conference games, Wood led the way with a 1.056 slugging percentage, eight home runs, 29 RBI and 57 total bases.
It has been a busy week on the awards circuit for the senior, as she was chosen NEWMAC Player of the Year on Tuesday and yesterday selected as a Google Cloud Academic All-District honoree. Wood and her teammates begin play Friday afternoon in the NCAA Division III Medford Regional against Eastern Connecticut at 2pm at Tufts.
Virginia Wesleyan University junior pitcher Hanna Hull, who has won the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division III National Player of the Year award the past two seasons, highlights a star-studded list.
Two schools - Coe (IA) and St. Thomas (MN) - have two players currently on the list, while 21 institutions have one player apiece. The Great Lakes and West regions have the most players on the list — with five each — while the Atlantic, East and Midwest have four representatives, and the Central, New England and Northeast have one apiece.
In all, there are 16 seniors, four juniors and four sophomores in the group. East Texas Baptist University pitcher/utility player Beatriz Lara is the lone freshman in the mix.
The list, which started with 50 names, will be cut one more time — to 10 finalists — before just one pitcher and player remain at the conclusion of the season. The two winners will come from the 10 finalists chosen at the next update.
A Pitcher of the Year award was added to the Player of the Year honor prior to this season. The list is compiled annually by the NFCA's Division III All-America committee.
